Westminster to Scrap Free Evening Parking

FLINT, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2010) - In a move which has angered residents of the London Borough, Westminster County Council is proposing measures which will see it abolish free evening parking across the West End. The proposals will see those parking in the area being forced to pay, even at night, as part of plans by the council to raise an extra £14 million in revenue.

Westminster plans to extend parking meter charges and single yellow line penalties until midnight from Monday to Saturday in its central controlled zones. Currently, there is free parking in those spaces from 6.30pm onwards.

The council is also planning to double existing parking charges in some areas, for example St. John's Wood would rise from the existing rate of £1.10 per hour to £2.20. Central zones currently charge £4.40 per hour but this could rise as high as £5. Residents with parking permits, however, will be exempt from the new enforcement structure.

These reports have led to concerns from many businesses in the area that potential customers will stay away. Motoring groups have also attacked the measures, accusing the council of trying to recoup money lost due to the recession. The council issued a report last month claiming that prices needed to rise in 'harmonisation' with other councils, such as neighbouring Camden. Apparently council chiefs are under pressure to find an additional income stream to make up a £14 million shortfall, with parking being one of the areas earmarked.

It is not all bad news, however, as a spokesperson for Staveley Head, one of the UK's leading brokers of taxi insurance comments:

"This is a move which has rightly angered residents. However, for many of our clients, who operate taxi firms in the area, it is good news as it will encourage more people to use taxis rather than taking the car."
