Westmount Taxpayers Demand Change of Arena Plan, Question Use of Public Funds for a Privileged Few

WESTMOUNT, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Nov. 24, 2011) -

Tired of being shut-out at Westmount City Hall, more than 2,100 concerned citizens have signed a petition to CHANGE WESTMOUNT ARENA PLAN. Among them are some of the most well-known contributors to community life in Westmount and Montreal.

They question the legitimacy of an extravagant $37 million dollar project, and the waste of public tax money, to construct two full-size hockey rinks. This misguided mega-complex threatens the tranquility of historic Westmount Park and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

THIS IS THE WRONG PROJECT, AT THE WRONG SITE, AT THE WRONG PRICE

It does not fit Westmount's demographics, and is not a multi-generational facility. This project is driven by $20 million dollars in provincial and federal grants, and the principal beneficiary appears to be a private school. This is an unconscionable waste of public money, at a time of great austerity.

The project is 18 months behind schedule. The chief architect was recently dismissed by the City, which is now pushing full-speed ahead with a contractor-led project despite mounting criticism.

RESIDENTS ARE DEMANDING A FULL PUBLIC ACCOUNTING OF ALL MONIES SPENT ON THIS PROJECT TO DATE

Only 4% percent of Westmount's population of 21,000, play hockey. This project is not the family-friendly, multi-generational facility that taxpayers need. It panders to the few, while ignoring the many.

THIS PROJECT CAN AND MUST BE CHANGED
