Weston Bakeries: Longueuil Facility Closing

LONGUEUIL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 26, 2010) - Boulangeries Weston Québec ltée announced today its decision to close its Longueuil bakery. Operations at the plant will be progressively reduced in the period leading up to full closing, which is planned for December 31, 2010.

Operating in a highly competitive environment, Boulangeries Weston must continually improve efficiencies. An evaluation of its manufacturing network in Quebec has revealed significant and recurring reliability issues at the Longueuil facility that resulted in higher costs and lower customer service levels.

"Our preference was to conduct an in-depth evaluation of the Longueuil operations and take the necessary corrective measures to attain a satisfactory reliability level - one that would compare with the other plants of the company" stated Sylvain Roussel, Vice-president of Human Resources. "Status quo was not an acceptable option. In addition, rigid work schedules at Longueuil prevented Weston from meeting the delivery requirements of its customers. With the future of the plant at stake, we have been transparent in exposing and discussing the issues with union representatives."

After several months of negotiations, it still has not been possible to reach a settlement for the renewal of the Longueuil plant's collective agreement. The last settlement offer put forward by Boulangeries Weston maintained working conditions for its employees and proposed a four-year (4-year) collective agreement, as well as a 2% salary adjustment for each year of the agreement, and the maintenance of the three-day work schedule that met the delivery requirements of its customers. Today, employees rejected this offer.

The Company has therefore decided to concentrate its production in the other plants of its manufacturing network. Current production volume at the Longueuil plant will be transferred gradually to other Weston facilities in Quebec, using a transition plan to be outlined at a later date.

As a result, the total number of Weston employees in Quebec is projected to remain stable.

Employees of the Longueuil plant will receive severance pay well in excess of statutory minimums as well as re-location assistance.
