Whamcloud Introduces Chroma, New Complete Storage Solution for Building Lustre Appliances

All the Benefits of Linux and Lustre Plus an Advanced Management Console for Configuration, Maintenance and Monitoring

DANVILLE, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 9, 2011) - Whamcloud, a venture-backed company formed from a worldwide network of high-performance computing (HPC) storage industry veterans, today announced its new storage solution built for large scale, high bandwidth storage needs. Named Chroma, it allows users to tap into the power and scalability of Lustre, the world's fastest technology for consolidating mass storage into a single coherent file system. Chroma vastly simplifies installation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring, and fault diagnosis. The intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) provides non-specialists valuable insight into the storage system. The scriptable application programming interface (API) enables enterprise scale automation and is ideal for power users.

"Lustre has incredible benefits in speed and scalability that are now accessible by a much wider group of customers. With Chroma, you get all the benefits of Lustre, with a low barrier to entry," said Robert Read, Head of New Products at Whamcloud. "Chroma is not just a GUI. It is a complete storage solution that provides a deep understanding of the relationship between workload and storage performance, something only available to Lustre experts until now."

Chroma is a new purpose-built system for virtualizing storage using the Lustre filesystem, including a new management console for easy configuration, maintenance and monitoring cluster storage. It has been designed to utilize enterprise-class storage for top performance with minimal interruptions. Chroma will be available through Whamcloud partners as a Lustre appliance.

"DDN's customers are resolving many of the world's most difficult computational simulation challenges, and to do so they expect proven, efficient and simple solutions to scale with their mission. We are pleased to provide Chroma as part of our proven and tightly integrated ExaScaler solution. This factory-configured, plug-and-play solution will give our customers the flexibility, scalability, and world-class support that customers demand from our Lustre-based appliances," said Larry Jones, Sr. Director, HPC/Life Science Marketing at DataDirect Networks.

"The emergence of parallel file systems like Lustre is a key component of data access in areas such as manufacturing, finance and research," said Addison Snell, Chief Executive Officer, Intersect360 Research. "We see solid growth in the next five years in both the High Performance Technical Computing (HPTC) and High Performance Business Computing (HPBC) markets, and this bodes well for companies that are looking to take advantage of this demand for products and services."

"Lustre is still the best filesystem technology for the TOP500 supercomputing sites and that won't change. But Chroma provides a chance to bring those same incredible storage capabilities to many customers who do not consider themselves HPC shops," said Brent Gorda, CEO of Whamcloud. "We're very proud of our New Products team for building something both powerful and much easier to use than what has been available to this point."
