The Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government, worked in conjunction with the White House in selecting the champions.

The winning open-data applications vary widely in scope, from navigating complicated zoning ordinances to informing parents of child-friendly destinations to helping asthma patients track the use of their medication.
