WhitePages Launches New Capability in Current Caller ID to Fight Phone Scams

Functionality Protects Consumers From Thousands of "One Ring" Scam Numbers

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwired - Feb 25, 2014) - WhitePages, the leading provider of contact information for people and businesses in the U.S., today announced new functionality added to WhitePages Current, a free call and text ID app for Android mobile devices, to help consumers protect themselves from costly phone scams. With the rise of the recent "One Ring" phone scam, the company has added over twenty thousand new scam numbers tied to One Ring and similar scams to alert consumers with an immediate notification if a call comes from one of the flagged numbers. This new feature will enable WhitePages Current users to fight spam further as new cases arise.

The latest One Ring and IRS phone scams have hit mobile consumers in the U.S. hard in recent weeks, with many consumers racking up big charges due to these fraudulent calls. The One Ring scam tricks users into returning an unknown call, which is then routed to a paid service and incurs charges on their phone bill. WhitePages has been monitoring this activity closely and continues to help consumers fight fraud with its spam identification technology and accompanying spam scores based on hundreds of millions of phone numbers searched through WhitePages services. WhitePages' users are also able to leave comments about spam activity for a particular phone number, which factors into a phone number's overall spam score.

"We take spam very seriously and our goal is to provide a variety of tools to help consumers avoid these types of calls. This new WhitePages Current feature demonstrates our mission in helping consumers have a better understanding of who's on the other end of the line so they can filter out unsolicited, and potentially dangerous calls," said Tom Donlea, director of risk services at WhitePages. "We know spammers continuously create new ways to scam consumers, and we have already added thousands of new numbers into our spam scoring database to continue to provide consumers with the best protection."

In 2012, according to Pew Internet Research, 68 percent of cell phone users received unwanted sales and marketing calls with one-quarter saying they encountered this problem at least a few times a week or more frequently. Phone scams continue to rise, but with the new One Ring feature users of WhitePages Current will be protected by:

  • An alert and "possible fraud or spam" message will be displayed during incoming calls that originate from reported One Ring scam phone numbers
  • Suspicious call designation for numbers in the user's recent call history
  • A prominent warning if an outbound call is made to a number with a high spam score, alerting the user that they are calling a suspicious number that may result in high charges to their phone bill

WhitePages Current provides rich call and text ID while streaming social network status updates from Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. The app incorporates a smart address book that updates in real-time with information about all of a user's contacts, including newly identified calls and texts, and allows users to search contact information from their social connections and WhitePages' directory of over 200 million people and businesses.

The app recently surpassed 9 billion calls and texts made by its users and 7 billion calls and texts identified. Since it launched in August of 2012, WhitePages Current has been a top 25 app in the competitive communications category on Google Play and was a finalist in the social category of the 2013 Webby Awards.
