Why 7 Is a Lucky Number for Quito, Ecuador

VICTORIA, BC--(Marketwired - October 02, 2014) -

For Quito, the capital of Ecuador, being recognized as a New7Wonders city could be the game changer it needs to ensure the first UNESCO World Heritage city is on the destination bucket list for North American visitors.

The global digital voting program will announce the next 14 contenders on October 7th, down from the 21 announced on July 7, 2014. The final seven will be revealed December 14, 2014.

"With the opening of our new international airport last year, Quito is enjoying more direct flight access and the world is discovering the diversity of our city, using Quito as the gateway to all of Ecuador's experiences," says Patricio Gaybor, Executive Director of Quito Tourism. "With digital voting by a global audience, the New7Wonders campaign is a fantastic endorsement of all the investment we have put into preserving our cultural history, our natural spaces and new tourism experiences."

Earlier this month over $87 million in new hotel projects, to be built within the next five years, was announced at the South American Hotel Industry Conference. Quito's award winning Centre Historic is recognized as one of the largest and best preserved in South America. Ecuador's Government and the Mayor of Quito have committed to an ongoing Revitalization program for the Centro Historico with the goal to preserve, maintain and enhance the area. In the first phase, $83 million will be invested by 2017 and a total of $675 million is estimated to be invested in the project overall.

Quito is also a growing and vibrant city of more than 2.2 million citizens. Perched at 2,800 metres, it is one of the highest capital cities in the world. Although it has a cosmopolitan feel, its proximity to the Andean highlands gives it a sense of wild beauty. The Cotopaxi Volcano, which last erupted in 1999, towers above the city and from city landmarks like El Panecillo and its hilltop statue of the Virgin Mary, visitors can spot the summits of Cotopaxi, Cayambe and the other volcanic giants lining the Avenue of Volcanoes.

From the peacefulness of the city's many parks, like 165-acre La Carolina where dog walkers, joggers, cyclists and other sports enthusiasts gather on weekends or for evening strolls, to the pulsing nightlife of La Mariscal, Quito is a city of diversity. Museums like the Museo Del Banco Central del Ecuador house an outstanding collection of pre-Columbian metalwork and art as well as 16th, 17th and 18th Century works from Escuela Quitena, while the Museo de Ciudad takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Quito's colourful history. Mercado Artesenal de la Mariscal is home to hundreds of stalls showcasing everything from wood carvings and alpaca sweaters from the Andes to modern art and fresh roasted coffee.

"We are encouraging people to Vote For Quito as a New7Wonders city for our commitment to showcasing our past but also because we are investing in our future, with a goal to be a top global tourism destination," said Mr. Gaybor. "We are absolutely ready to welcome the world."

As a potential New7Wonders city, Quito is joined by Bangkok, Barcelona, Beirut, Chicago, Doha, Durban, Havana, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, London, Mendoza, Mexico City, Mumbai, Perth, Reykjavik, Saint Petersburg, Seoul, Shenzhen and Vigan.

People can go to and to vote for their top 7 cities.

About the New7Wonders:

The Swiss-based New7Wonders Foundation was established in 2001 by the Swiss-born Canadian filmmaker, author and adventurer Bernard Weber, to contribute to the protection of the world's human-built and natural heritage and to foster respect for our planet's diversity.

The first two chapters of New7Wonders, the New7Wonders of the World and the New7Wonders of Nature, were the world's first-ever global election campaigns. To date, citizens worldwide using digital communications technologies, creating a "Global Memory" for the first time in history, have cast over 600 million votes.

The number 7 is central to the New7Wonders Global Memory concept, which is all about 7 things that everyone can remember and in which they can participate.
