Wi-LAN Wins More Contracts in the Middle East and Central Asia

CALGARY, CANADA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 24, 2005) -

$1.6 Million Includes New and Repeat Orders for Wi-LAN's Libra MX WiMAX Platform

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) today announced receipt of $1.6 million in orders for its broadband wireless solutions from customers in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and the Gulf Region, including $500,000 of orders for the Libra MXTM WiMAX platform. The products are being used for large-scale data, voice and video surveillance networks throughout the region. In addition to repeat orders for Libra MX from existing customers, a new Libra MX order for a video surveillance application in Lebanon is included. Wi-LAN expects to fill the orders during October and November 2005.

"This Libra MX order is the first of many future video surveillance applications orders that we expect for the Libra MX system in Lebanon", said Fadi Harake, General Manager of Compumatix SARL, Wi-LAN's Certified Gold Partner in Lebanon.

"We are very pleased with our progress in the Middle East. This is an intensely competitive market for broadband wireless systems and our success there demonstrates the superior combination of products and service that Wi-LAN offers," said Chris Beadle, Senior Vice President - Sales & Marketing, Wi-LAN Inc. "Libra MX is the highest performance broadband wireless product available today in the 3.5 GHz licensed frequency band, offering both 3.5 MHz and 7 MHz channels, and it is supported by Wi-LAN's field engineering staff, arguably the most experienced group of engineers in the business."

"These orders provide Wi-LAN with further growth for its Libra MX installed base in the Middle East and Central Asia regions, which I expect will seed sales of our WiMAX Forum Certified(1) equipment in the future" said Hassan Abdelghany, Wi-LAN's Vice President of Sales - Middle East and Central Asia regions. "I am especially pleased to see our customers utilizing the multi-services capabilities of our Libra MX system in a variety of applications including security surveillance in Lebanon, banking in Libya and licensed service provider applications in Saudi Arabia. "

Libra MX is the industry's first WiMAX platform that meets the performance and throughput requirements of today's demanding point-to-point and point-to-multipoint broadband applications while providing an economic and straightforward migration path to WiMAX compliant networks. Built on Wi-LAN's patented W-OFDM technology - the foundation for WiMAX Forum Certified(1) products - Libra MX is a powerful and flexible solution, including both base stations and subscriber units, for a wide variety of broadband wireless applications. Libra MX is Wi-LAN's fourth-generation W-OFDM product and provides a stronger-than-ever business case for carriers, large service providers and enterprises delivering solutions such as: urban Wi-Fi hot zones, cellular backhaul, E1/T1 replacement, enterprise multiple tenant unit / multiple dwelling unit (MTU/MDU) and voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) applications.

The initial release of Libra MX operates in the international licensed 3.5 GHz frequency band. It is the only product available in this band that offers both 3.5 and 7 MHz channel sizes, delivering excellent performance in challenging Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) environments, and throughput of up to 288 Mbps to up to 12,000 users per cell, at a range of up to 30 kilometers in a point-to-multipoint configuration, and up to 75 kilometers for point-to-point voice and data transmission.

The leading-edge design of Libra MX delivers carrier-class quality of service (QoS) - enabling prioritized "triple-play" services: video, data, and voice. The re-designed OFDM engine in Libra MX supports four times as many voice calls as other similar products on the market. Libra MX is cPCI card-based and "hot-swappable", meaning customers can easily add sectors to increase capacity or redundancy, and add new functionality - while keeping the network live.
