Widevine Files Second Patent in Lawsuit Against Verimatrix

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2008) - Today Widevine has filed a motion to assert a second patent, U.S. Patent No. 7,376,831, concerning its unique Widevine Cypher® technology for video encryption against Verimatrix based on Verimatrix's sales of its infringing Video Content Authority System (VCAS). Verimatrix is continuing to infringe and willfully infringe Widevine's patents.

Widevine previously sued Verimatrix in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas for infringement of its U.S. Patent No. 7,165,175, and that lawsuit is currently ongoing. As with its claim for infringement of the first patent, Widevine is seeking both money damages as well as a permanent injunction to prohibit Verimatrix from making further sales of its infringing VCAS product line.

"Widevine has invested heavily in R&D leading to key intellectual property innovations for securing multimedia content delivered over any network. Widevine's highly valuable intellectual property represents a key competitive advantage for any video operator or internet service provider who wants to affordably and efficiently protect copyrights, pay media revenue streams or ad-based revenues," said Mani Aliabadi, Widevine's General Counsel. "When our intellectual property is taken without our permission we have no alternative but to quash such behavior as quickly and efficiently as possible. We will not tolerate any further abuse of our thriving patent portfolio by any company and their investors."

Widevine has important intellectual property in the field of content protection with a robust patent portfolio of over 30 issued patents and numerous domestic and international patents pending.

Widevine continues to retain Darby and Darby, a globally recognized law firm specializing in intellectual property rights, to assert its second claim for patent infringement against Verimatrix.
