William Lyon Homes' "Job Shadow Day" Collaboration Inspires Area Students

BRENTWOOD, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 6, 2014) - As part of William Lyon Homes' ongoing commitment to the communities in which they build, the company proudly sponsored "Job Shadow Day" in collaboration with the Educational Outreach Committee of Professional Women in Building (PWB) of BIA Bay Area and Junior Achievement. On October 29th, the event generated the largest turnout ever with 60 junior and senior students from Brentwood's Liberty High School and Antioch High School gathering at the Cielo neighborhood within the Palmilla community of Brentwood for an extraordinary learning experience. Students interested in the homebuilding field had the opportunity to meet top experts who educated them on the exciting homebuilding process -- from architecture, mechanical plans and landscaping to sales, marketing and design. Students also safely toured the community to observe developments in progress and enjoyed hands-on experience building a deluxe doghouse. By educating and mentoring students, William Lyon Homes' Northern California management and field construction teams encouraged them to consider a future career in the homebuilding industry, further cementing the company's dedication to inspiring our next generation of leaders.

"We were incredibly honored to be a part of Job Shadow Day and contribute a positive learning experience to local students," said Kathy Floyd, Director of Sales for William Lyon Homes. "These are bright, enthusiastic kids and our team thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with them at this event. I believe they inspired us as much as we inspired them."

Throughout the day, the students rotated through four stations, each highlighting an aspect of new home building. Station 1 focused on architectural plans and construction; Station 2 taught students about HVAC and mechanical plans; Station 3 discussed landscape engineering with opportunities for hands-on participation; and Station 4 gave insight into post-building careers with William Lyon Homes' Kathy Floyd, Director of Sales; Laurie Meneley, Marketing Manager; and Nancy Giangeruso, Vice President of Regional Design Center directing that portion of the event. The team discussed opportunities in sales, marketing and design, as well as the intricacies involved in the interior design and maintenance of model homes. To underscore the discussion, students enjoyed a guided tour of Cielo's four well-appointed model homes.

During the lunch break William Lyon Homes' Gary Haddy, VP Regional Operations; Steve Jones, Palmilla Project Manager; and Carl Morabito, Northern California Division President inspired students with personal narratives of their homebuilding experiences. The lunch culminated with the presentation of a $1,000 donation from William Lyon Homes to Junior Achievement. Steph Peek from William Lyon Homes served as organizer for the event.

The Educational Outreach Committee strives to inspire, mentor and educate students about their future and to increase awareness of the positive role the home building industry plays in bettering the environment, creating jobs and building communities, while inspiring a new generation to become leaders within the building industry. William Lyon Homes was delighted to lend support to this worthwhile event.
