Windsor Regional Hospital workers join CUPE

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 11, 2013) - In a show of confidence for Canada's largest union representing 35,000 hospital workers in Ontario, Windsor Regional Hospital workers recently voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), in a representation vote triggered by the merger of programs at two local Windsor hospital sites, Windsor Regional Met and Ouellette campus (formerly Hotel-Dieu/Grace Hospital) into the Windsor Regional Met site.

"We welcome our newest members with open arms," said Lucille Chouinard, president of CUPE 1132. "We've worked with our brothers and sisters for years and now with them joining CUPE, we will truly be one big family." Prior to the representation vote, CUPE represented 30 hospital workers at the Met site and now with the victory, CUPE will represent all 210 hospital workers, at both sites, who are registered practical nurses, certified and non-certified assistants, ambulation assistants and rehabilitation assistants.

"These workers recognized that CUPE is a leader in the health care sector and the union of choice for hospital workers," continued Chouinard. "Now all of our hospital workers at the Windsor Met site will have the backing of Canada's largest union with the resources and expertise to fully represent our members."

CUPE is Canada's largest union, representing over 630,000 members in different sectors, including hospitals, retirement and long-term care, universities, schools, municipalities, social services, transportation and other sectors.
