Windswept and Symbium Corporation Partner to Deliver Unique Solution in Automated Server Management: The Boyd Group Cuts IT Headcount in Half by Deploying Innovative Solution

OTTAWA, CANADA--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 15, 2005) - Windswept Integrated Technologies, an Ottawa-based IT service provider, today announced a unique service offering to give customers increased service levels and uptime while lowering costs. Branded as S.W.A.T. (Secure Windswept Autonomic Technology), it is an innovative IT services and solutions program that remotely monitors, fixes, and automates the resolution of IT problems often before the user even knows about them. The technology platform powering the S.W.A.T. solution is from Symbium Corporation. Windswept has signed an agreement with Symbium to resell its autonomic software engine and management platform as part of the S.W.A.T. offering.

S.W.A.T. addresses the two biggest, and until now incompatible goals of server management - minimizing server downtime while also reducing costs. "S.W.A.T. delivers on our commitment to customers to continually improve the level of service and price point", says John Goodsell, Windswept's President. He adds, "By automating maintenance tasks, server performance, frontline corrective action and processes, S.W.A.T. can reduce technology maintenance costs by as much as 30 percent. S.W.A.T. not only monitors servers but also takes the same corrective action a certified technician would take, without the time and cost of travel. With S.W.A.T., the Boyd Group of Companies replaced two full-time staff with one part-time technician, resulting in a significant reduction in labour costs."

The Boyd Group of Companies, an established Ottawa moving, storage and warehousing company for over 60 years, is realizing huge gains from S.W.A.T. Executive Vice-President Mike de Blois says, "When our servers are down, we are down. Our employees need 24/7 access to email and the ability to share information on-demand, therefore we must rely on our technology partners to help maintain the necessary service levels our customers expect." "Since implementing the Windswept S.W.A.T. program with a support upgrade, we have been able to reduce our IT support staff from two full-time people to one certified technician two days a week. And all of this with an improvement in server availability. The savings have been significant and the technology has been fantastic."

Symbium is at the forefront of autonomic computing, an emerging area of information technology systems management. Borrowing concepts from the human body's autonomic nervous system, autonomic computing enables servers to watch over their operations and automatically take corrective action when things go wrong. Symbium VP of Technology, Jay Litkey, points out "by using our autonomic software engine and management platform, Windswept now has the ability to proactively monitor server hardware and software components, automatically address problems as they arise, and let administrators know about it all. In effect, the server becomes self-maintaining and self-healing." For example, if the amount of room on the server hard disk falls below a defined level, the SWAT solution can automatically manage and clean up disk space. If software applications crash on the server, the solution can automatically heal and restore service. Security can also be hardened by identifying unwanted processes and services running on the system and shutting them down.

As a full-service IT management company, Windswept also takes advantage of another key feature of the Symbium technology, full remote server control using KVM-over-IP technology. A Windswept IT professional does not have to be in the Boyd Group server room if, for instance, a server requires a reboot or other kind of attention. Most manual system administration tasks can now be performed remotely from any computer with a network connection. Fewer on-site visits translate into reduced server ownership costs. As Jay Litkey says, "it's like having a full-time, automated IT technician embedded inside the server".

The combination of Windswept's IT service and Symbium's autonomic server management technology resolves the long-standing performance/cost challenge faced by companies like the Boyd Group. The S.W.A.T. solution is available from WindSwept and began installation at customer locations January 2005.
