WineAlign Announces Winners of The 2014 National Wine Awards of Canada

Largest competition for Canadian wines featured 1,335 entries from 209 wineries

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 6, 2014) - WineAlign, Canada's largest wine site, has published the results of the 2014 National Wine Awards of Canada, a competition that recognizes the best in Canadian wines. This is the largest competition for Canadian wines, with 1,335 entries from 209 wineries from across the country.

In its 14th year, the National Wine Awards of Canada were held in June in Penticton, British Columbia. The wines were tasted by an extensive panel of the most respected wine writers, wine critics, retail buyers, Master Sommeliers and Masters of Wines in Canada. In all, 19 judges spent five days blind tasting the wines before recognising the very best with platinum, gold, silver and bronze medals. The complete results are available online at

"From the quality of the judging process to the quality of the entries received, the National Wine Awards of Canada is the most revered competition for wine producers across Canada," said Anthony Gismondi, Co-Head Judge and Principal at WineAlign. "We couldn't ask for a broader, more representative selection of wines from Ontario and British Columbia and growing interest from Quebec and Nova Scotia."

After a week of tasting and contemplation, the judges issued 14 platinum medals to the absolute best wines in the competition - the top one per cent. The complete list of platinum winners is available at WineAlign. The judges also awarded a record 82 gold medals. Based on overall performance against its peers, Peller Estates Niagara, the recipient of 13 medals in this year's competition, was named Canadian Winery of the Year.

"We were pleased with the number of entries in this year's competition, an increase of over 20% from last year," said Bryan McCaw, founder of WineAlign. "Canadian wineries are realizing that The Nationals are a unique competition, where results are based on the most objective and professional judging process in the country. For our part, each wine submitted is added to the WineAlign database and visible in perpetuity to the 1.5M annual unique visitors to WineAlign. Winning wines are also recognized with virtual medals, making it easier for wine drinkers to identify the top wines produced in Canada. Plus, with our recent site translation and expansion into Quebec under Chacun Son Vin, we expect our audience to grow to more than 2 million in the next 12 months."
