Winner Named in Annual Scotch Packaging Tape Sculpture Contest

Kent Hathaway From Oklahoma City Wins $5,000 in Scotch Off the Roll Contest From 3M


ST. PAUL, MN--(Marketwire - Apr 14, 2011) - Scotch Brand awarded Kent Hathaway from Oklahoma City, Okla. a $5,000 cash prize in The Scotch Off the Roll Tape Sculpture Contest, sponsored by 3M. Hathaway took his creativity off the roll by designing and creating The Big One-- a tape sculpture depicting a brother and sister on a fishing trip -- using 12 rolls of Scotch Packaging Tape. Kent's sculpture 'stuck out' to the judges, beating out dozens of other tape sculpture entries for the grand prize.

About the contest:

  • Artists constructed tape sculptures using Scotch Packaging Tape, and submitted photos, unique sculpture names and brief descriptions to www.offtherollcontest.com.
  • Entries were open to a public vote, which accounted for 10 percent of the final scores.
  • Eighty-one total entries received more than 11,000 votes from October 18, 2010 through February 28, 2011.
  • Winning entries were chosen by a panel of experts based on creativity, execution, presentation and online public votes.

About the first prize winners and the people's choice award:
Three first prize winners each received a $500 cash prize. One People's Choice Award Winner, determined by the number of public votes received, won a prize pack of Scotch Premium Performance Packaging Tape:

  • First Prize Winner: David Kleeman from Indianapolis, Ind. created The Mermaid Mechanic, Her Clockwork Sea Dragon and the Missing Wrench using 46 rolls of Scotch Packaging Tape.
  • First Prize Winner: Cameron Nunez from Apopka, Fla. created Sing and Scream Along using more than 24 rolls of Scotch Packaging Tape. Nunez also took home the People's Choice Award for his work.
  • First Prize Winner: Matthew Buckley from Washington, D.C. created Triangulated Torus using more than 13 rolls of Scotch Packaging Tape.

Submissions were judged by a panel of noted artists:

  • Mark Jenkins: American artist most widely known for the street installations he creates using Scotch Brand Packaging Tape; maintains the website www.TapeSculpture.org and teaches the tape casting process in workshops around the world.
  • Joe Davidson: Nationally recognized sculptor who works with disparate materials, including Scotch Tape, to create large-scale installations; exhibits art throughout North America.
  • Jesse Nolan: Toy sculptor and art teacher at The Paxon School for Advanced Studies in Jacksonville, Florida; incorporates the use of Scotch Packaging Tape as an art medium in workshops and classes.
