Wintegra Provides Industries' Highest Density PWE3 Solution

Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge Software (PWE3) Plus UFE2 Companion FPGA Provide Immediate Cost Savings for Cellular Providers and Passive Optical Network (PON) Deployments

AUSTIN, TX -- (MARKET WIRE) -- June 6, 2005 -- Wintegra Inc., a fabless semiconductor company focused on the access infrastructure market, today announced general availability of its Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge software (PWE3), further demonstrating its focus on the emerging standards of next generation telephony. PWE3 support allows providers, both wired and wireless, to send legacy TDM information (T1 or E1) over newer, cheaper, packet-based networks. Like all other data path software offerings, PWE3 is provided with WinPath processors with no NRE (non-recurring engineering expenses) or royalties. This PWE3 support is added to the growing list of available protocols from Wintegra, such as IP, ATM, TDM, and others.

PWE3 protocols are standards based and delineate the conversion of "conventional" telephony (n x T1/E1) into packets (one edge) and the conversion from packets back to T1/E1 data (at the other edge). PWE3 capitalizes on the wide availability of Metro Ethernet to carry packets much cheaper than sending data over more traditional T1/E1 lines. Wintegra's solution is unique in that no other silicon provider can implement a full OC-3 worth of T1/E1 (84 T1 or 63 E1) lines into a single device.

Since Wintegra's data path software is written in a high-level language, not assembly code, new protocols such as PWE3 can be quickly supported. By using Wintegra's PWE3 solution, cellular providers can connect their base stations to Base Station Controllers via packet networks rather than more costly T1 or E1 lines. Similarly PON, both GPON and EPON, can utilize PWE3 in numerous connections points to reduce deployment cost. PWE3 can be used at the Optical Network Termination (ONT) to convert several T1 to packets and again at the Optical Line Termination (OLT) in the Central Office to convert these packets back to T1s connecting this PON network to the traditional telephony network. PWE3 can be utilized in numerous places where inexpensive Ethernet connectivity is available in parallel to conventional T1/E1 connections.
