Winter Glare Dazzling Drivers, Warns Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 23, 2010) - Glare from the low lying winter sun is causing poor visibility and affecting motorists driving, Swinton Insurance can reveal.

An online survey of 1200 customers, conducted by Swinton Car Insurance, revealed that 65% of those surveyed thought a low lying sun was often overlooked as a hazard whilst driving and as a result, 72% think they're unprepared in how to overcome the danger.

The low lying sun impairs drivers' vision and can often make it impossible to drive, Swinton is issuing the following advice to reduce the chance of an accident and subsequent car insurance claim:

  • Reduce speeds dramatically.
  • Keep a big enough space from the car in front.
  • Carry a good pair of sunglasses.
  • Carry a rubber blade (ice scraper) to clear condensation from side windows.
  • Keep your windscreen clean.

Steve Chelton, Insurance Development Manager at Swinton, said, "Drivers are constantly reminded about the dangers of driving in snow, ice and strong winds and the dangers of getting dazzled by a low lying sun is often overlooked, it's important this isn't the case. Motorists should follow the above advice and remember not to take their sunglasses out of the car just because it's winter, as they are needed just as much."
