Wireless Market Remains Strong in Tough Economy According to The Linley Group's Mobile and Wireless Semiconductor Market Share Report

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - July 8, 2010) -  Unlike many other technology sectors, the mobile and wireless market shrugged off the economic downturn of last year according to The Linley Group's recently released Mobile and Wireless Semiconductor Market Share 2009 report. The report includes revenue and unit estimates for the leading wireless communication chips and processor IP (intellectual property) companies, and notable findings include:

-   In the wireless market, sales of unbranded handsets to developing nations grew, offsetting declines of branded handsets in established economies and phones incorporated more connectivity features, such as Bluetooth, FM, GPS, and Wi-Fi.
-   Revenue from sales of cellular baseband processors declined 7 percent, but unit shipments grew 4 percent.
-   Revenue from sales of connectivity chips grew 21 percent.
-   Shipments of CPU cores in the semiconductor IP market were flat compared with 2008, but there was growth in DSP and GPU IP.
What:   The report provides market share data for ten categories of semiconductors for wireless and mobile applications: cellular baseband processors, application processors, mobile multimedia processors, Bluetooth transceivers, mobile Wi-Fi chips, GPS receivers, FM-radio chips, 32-bit CPU IP, DSP IP, and GPU IP.
