With Meridian's New Mobile Profile, Learners Launch Training on Smartphones

CHANTILLY, VA--(Marketwire - January 18, 2011) - Meridian Knowledge Solutions, LLC has developed a mobile profile for its Meridian Global Learning Management System (LMS) -- software for delivering and tracking training online -- so businesspeople can launch and track training courses from smartphones, including Droid, iPhone and Blackberry. Meridian's new platform-agnostic profile serves up e-learning, transcripts and other features of the Meridian Global LMS optimized for a smartphone.

"We wanted to ensure that access to our LMS was just as optimized for a mobile workforce as it has been for conventional desktop and laptop users," said Vinay Nilakantan, director of product development and research at Meridian.

According to Training magazine's "2010 Training Industry Report," 7.2 percent of learners now use social networking or mobile training methods, an uptick of 1.5 percent versus 2009. The report also notes that 13.6 percent of trainers intend to purchase mobile learning products and services in 2011, a number slightly behind the 14.3 percent of those who plan to buy talent management tools.

"We're staying in front of the mobile trend but in sync with what users need, so we can make every R&D dollar count," added Roy Haythorn, executive vice president of Meridian Operations.

"You can access any LMS from a smartphone browser such as iPhone's Safari. But the pages you see tend to be cluttered with several options, which are more optimized for a desktop viewing area," said Nilakantan. "Our new mobile profile detects which browser the learner is accessing the LMS from, and delivers a view that's tailored to the type of device at his or her fingertips."

Here's an example of how it works. A manager launches an e-learning course from her office via a PC, but leaves halfway through the training to get to the airport. Once she arrives at the airport and clears security, she taps into Meridian's mobile LMS from her smartphone to pick up and complete the same course she worked on in her office. The new mobile profile is also suited for managers on the road who want to review or approve training that their workforce is taking.

"For organizations that are standardized on a single mobile platform, Meridian's long-term vision is to offer platform-specific apps," remarked Nilakantan.

Meridian's new mobile profile is available now, and the company will sell it as part of its LMS beginning with version 2011.2 on February 25, 2011. Meridian's mobile profile strategy complements the company's offline player Meridian Anywhere, which employers can use to take SCORM-conformant1 training courses without an Internet connection.

1 SCORM, or sharable content object reference model, is a collection of software standards for delivering online training.
