Women Are Not Only Starting Businesses, They Are Staying in Business, According to Decor&You®

SOUTHBURY, CT--(Marketwire - Apr 26, 2012) - Call it the economy, a need for a more flexible lifestyle or just a strong desire to be their own boss. Women are entering the small business arena more than ever, using their talents and passions and turning them into financial security. In celebration of National Small Business Week, beginning May 21st, Decor&You® DecorDesigners encourage American women to consider business ownership as a career option because, "Today, women are succeeding in industries that were once taboo for women," says Decor&You Founder and President Karen Powell.

The Small Business Administration finds that women-owned businesses account for 28 percent of all privately-owned businesses and they employ 9.2 million people. They contribute $2.38 trillion in revenue to the U.S. economy.

"Running their businesses out of their home gives our DecorDesigners total control of their time, schedule and how they run their businesses. They find it rewarding to build a team of decorators and work together to reap the benefits of their hard work. And, as their own boss, they can optimize their time to find the balance they need in other areas of their lives," says Powell.

According to an article on The Small Business Trends website -- where Guardian Life Index surveyed American small-business owners -- women are most likely to start businesses because they're unhappy with corporate life. When they become their own bosses, Guardian's research shows, they are more likely than male managers or entrepreneurs to be:

  • diligently engaged in strategic and tactical facets of their business
  • proactively customer-focused
  • likely to incorporate community and environment into their business plans
  • receptive to input and guidance from internal and external advisers
  • committed to creating opportunities for others

Guardian's research shows that by 2018 women entrepreneurs will be responsible for creating between 5 million and 5.5 million new jobs nationwide. That's more than half of the 9.7 million new jobs the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects small businesses to create.

Decor&You is the market leader and second largest interior design franchise in the country. "We encourage women all the time to use their passions and talents and turn them into a profit-making business for more financial security. Gone are the days when we can rely on a stable company or economy to provide for our families," says Powell.

DecorDesigners offer opportunities for both women and men to join a team of DecorDesigners targeting both the residential and commercial markets in the region.
