Women's Choice Award® Announces 2016 America's Best Breast Centers to Help Women Find Quality Care

Over 60% of Women Are Unable to Name the Top Quality Breast Cancer Facility in Their Communities

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL--(Marketwired - September 30, 2016) - The Women's Choice Award®, America's trusted referral source for the best in healthcare, has just announced its 2016 America's Best Breast Centers. This evidence-based designation is the only breast center award that identifies the country's best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women's Choice Award, and former publisher of Working Woman and Working Mother magazines, created the awards to empower women to make better healthcare choices following her own self-described "horrific" breast cancer experience. The victim of poor imaging, Passi's breast cancer was missed as she suffered through a surgical biopsy and two lumpectomies. She finally had a mastectomy in 2003 at the age of 42.

While Passi is proud to be a 13-year survivor, she is still pained by the thought of other women receiving the poor care she experienced. Driven by the finding that over 60 percent of women are unable to name the top quality breast cancer facility in their communities according to a Women's Choice Award survey, Passi is on a mission to educate every woman to begin her breast cancer journey with the very best care.

"If a woman has a lump, where she starts with her care will determine her path," said Passi. "If she starts with a top accredited breast center in her community, she is much more likely to have a better outcome. If she starts on the wrong path, it could affect not only her care, but her life. As we found, many women simply don't know where to go, or don't understand what an accredited center is, and that's why we created the America's Best Breast Centers list."

The list of 451 award winners represents breast centers that have met the high standards of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) and carry the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) seal from the American College of Radiology. Those breast centers associated with a hospital must receive a rating in the top 75% for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) patient recommendation measures, or their equivalent in the case of breast centers without hospital affiliation.

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among American women according to the American Cancer Society. One in eight women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime.

"The Women's Choice Award is important to the healthcare industry as it sets a high standard of care that all patients deserve to receive," said James Connolly, MD, FCAP, chair of the NAPBC. "The NAPBC supports their mission to drive awareness for better breast care and encourages all hospitals to strive to become an America's Best Breast Center."

Passi added, "Whether it's an annual mammogram or addressing a more serious concern, every woman deserves the best breast care and an opportunity to live a healthy life. By letting women know which breast centers in their area are among America's best, we are able to reduce their risk by helping them make smarter healthcare choices."
