TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - May 06, 2016) - Mental health, fatigue, internet security and regulation of the safety profession are some of the topics addressed at hundreds of events occurring throughout Canada as part of North America Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week events, designed to make companies and their employees focus on safety.
"All Canadians deserve to come home safe and healthy at the end of the day," states the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering president Jim Hopkins, CHSC, CRSP. "NAOSH Week events in workplaces and communities across Canada are a vital spotlight on the importance of safety."
Mental Health is a topic of growing concern. Each week, half a million Canadians will not go to work because of mental health problems or illnesses. By 2041, the cost of lost productivity due to mental illness will be $16 billion per year.
The Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, addressed CEOs, employees and safety advocates at the launch of NAOSH Week in Ottawa. The event featured a panel discussion on the future of health and safety in Canada.
Sarah Mohammed and Rain Cahigas of Winnipeg received first place in the national Youth Safety Video Contest. The students attended the NAOSH Week launch, where they were honored and their video was premiered. It can be viewed on the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website, www.ccohs.ca.
