Kaplan International Colleges, a lead provider of English language courses, has welcomed world record-breaking pilot Carlo Schmid to their English school in Manchester.

Carlo, 22, stopped off in Manchester on his way to becoming the youngest person in the world to fly solo around the globe by achieving the task in just 80 days and beating the previous record set by the American Barrington Irving in 2007.

Manchester served as Carlo's final destination before completing his journey and he had just enough time to check into Kaplan's English language school to give a presentation to students and staff about his experiences on the journey.

Of the many challenges facing Carlo on his amazing journey, it was the weather that proved most difficult, from the scorching heat of the desert, to the icy clouds of the Arctic; it often forced him to make difficult decisions while flying to stay on schedule.

Add to this the technical problems of aviation travel and the administration minefield of flying through 18 countries and it's truly a remarkable achievement that Carlo was able to accomplish his goal and break the world record upon landing back in Switzerland.

Over 100 students watched with fascination as Carlo shared videos, pictures and a brilliant speech that captured the imagination of all in attendance. A full 30 minutes of questions followed with students eager to learn more about the young pilot.

Social Programme Manager Jordan Holmes presented Carlo with some signed Manchester United memorabilia as a thank you from Kaplan for inspiring their English language students with his charity work.

"Carlo is an inspiration to us all here at Kaplan, his achievement has given the students extra motivation to reach their own personal goals. We were delighted that he came to share his experience with us here at Kaplan Manchester and wish him every success in the future," said Aurelian Popescu, Kaplan Manchester School Principal.

Following the passing of his 45 year-old mother to cancer, Carlo decided to make his dream of flying around the world a reality and set the wheels in motion for the journey of a life time to raise money for Unicef in tribute to his mother.

With the help of a dedicated team to organize logistics and fundraising, Carlo departed his home country of Switzerland in a single engine Cessna Aircraft and spent the next 3 months flying through 18 different countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and North America.
