World-Renown Architecture Firm HBA Chooses Aryaka Over Riverbed and MPLS Links

Large File Downloads Made 10X Faster, "Simple as Sipping a Cup of Coffee"

MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 3, 2012) - HBA / Hirsch Bedner Associates, the global leader in hospitality design, has selected Aryaka's cloud-based WAN optimization as-a-service over costly and time-consuming MPLS networks and WAN optimization appliances, including Riverbed's Steelhead products. HBA leverages Aryaka's secure, intelligent and optimized network to enable global teams located in India, China and the United States to transfer large design files faster for smoother collaboration and increased productivity.

HBA (www.HBA.com), employs hundreds of interior designers, graphic designers and art consultants who work on projects using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to exchange large files, including Autodesk AutoCAD and 3ds Max design tools. FTP works well for users on the local area network (LAN), but performance is dramatically reduced across the wide area network (WAN) because of high latency and reduced throughput. With 21 new projects opening all over the globe in 2012, the company knew it needed a way to optimize FTP to ensure real-time collaboration between design studios separated by thousands of miles.

"In our search for a WAN optimization solution, Riverbed repeatedly came up as a recommended product but in digging deeper we discovered that an MPLS investment was required, further adding to our costs," said Bruce Difley, HBA's IT Director. "We talked to AT&T in September about getting a dedicated link, didn't get a complete quote until December and then learned the order would take an additional 100 days to complete. We went with Aryaka's cloud-based solution for security, connectivity and speed, and were up in running in a matter of weeks."

With Aryaka's affordable and simple to deploy solution, FTP performance no longer slowed to a crawl over HBA's WAN. By optimizing FTP on Aryaka, HBA noticed immediate results with data transfers reduced by 34%. Download times shrank from 30 minutes to 3 minutes.

"Our team typically works on a drawing in our Santa Monica headquarters and uploads it to the FTP server for the global teams to download and share," Difley said. "On the other side of the world, one of our people would come into the office early to start the downloads, walk around and get a cup of coffee and wait for the file to arrive. Now all they do is hit 'download' and it's there as they're taking a first sip of coffee -- it's as simple as that."

As a result of its Aryaka deployment, HBA has been able to save tens of thousands of dollars by avoiding the purchase of MPLS links connecting its Shanghai and Hong Kong offices, which could have cost the company as much as $10,000 a month. "We might as well have moved the entire company overseas to ensure real-time collaboration," Difley added. Now the company's improved connection to its Shanghai office is critical, because China has become a pivot point for HBA's global expansion as it opens a number of groundbreaking luxury hotel projects there.

Aryaka Delivers Benefits to HBA:

  • Superior communication and collaboration
  • Improved productivity
  • Better user experience
  • Bandwidth and cost savings
  • Optimal use of network resources
  • Real-time insight into global network and application performance

"HBA is known for unveiling the world's most renowned hotels, resorts and spas, and in doing so generates huge amounts of files that inevitably undergo multiple changes from planning to implementation," said Sonal Puri, vice president of Marketing and Sales for Aryaka. "By leveraging Aryaka's optimized network in the cloud, HBA's global teams can share files faster and complete their design tasks according to schedule. More productive teams solidify HBA's ability to give its clients the best possible property as an end result."
