BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - Mar 4, 2013) - Worlds Inc. (OTCBB: WDDD) has received a "Notice of Allowance" from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for patent application no. 13/084195 titled "System and Method for Enabling Users to Interact in a Virtual Space." This is the eighth patent allowance in Worlds' intellectual property (IP) portfolio. The forthcoming patent relates to computer architecture for three-dimensional graphical multi-user interactive virtual world systems also known as Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG).
Worlds believes it is particularly noteworthy that the USPTO issued this allowance after examining a large number of references cited in a prior litigation involving predecessor patents with the same description as the newly-issued patent, creating a strong presumption of validity of the claims contained in this new patent.
"Worlds is continuing to build its IP portfolio by expanding and patenting the technologies the World's founders and team members began creating in-house starting in 1994 and have continued to develop over the past 15+ years," stated Thom Kidrin, Worlds' CEO. "Each successive patent strengthens our patent protection. Our technologies have helped the MMORPG industry become what it is today and we are working hard to protect our IP for the benefit of our shareholders whose investments have helped us create it."
This patent is a continuation of US patents 6,219,045, 7,181,690, 7,493,558, 7,945,856 8,082,501, 8,145,998 & 8,161,385 issued in 2001, 2007, 2008, 2011and 2012, respectively, and bearing the same title. Worlds Inc. has additional patent continuations in process at the USPTO.
As previously announced, Worlds Inc., represented by legal counsel Susman Godfrey L.L.P., filed a patent infringement lawsuit on March 30, 2012 against. Activision Blizzard, Inc., Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Activision Publishing, Inc. (Activision Blizzard, Inc. et al) in Civil Action No, 1:12-CV-10576 (DJC) in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The patent claim construction hearing, also called a Markman hearing, is set for June 27, 2013.
