Worldwide Contribution Accelerates Ceph Innovation

Developers From 15 Countries on Four Continents Attend 'Giant' Ceph Summit to Build the Future of Storage

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - Mar 24, 2014) - Inktank, the company delivering Ceph -- the massively scalable, open source, software-defined storage system -- today announced a remarkable turnout for the Ceph Developer Summit for Giant. Earlier this month, dozens of developers from 15 countries on four continents gathered online to share new ideas around the upcoming "Giant" release of Ceph. The popularity of the event reflects how the Ceph community continues to thrive, collaborate, and produce tangible results.

While there were 26 different "blueprint" discussions during the Summit, there were several notable projects that included:

  • Accelio RDMA Messenger - This work, done in cooperation with Mellanox, seeks to extend the internal messaging to work over the Accelio transport layer and bring even faster speeds to Ceph.

  • Pyramid Erasure Code - Further extending the work added in the "Firefly" major release of Ceph, this project will offer flexible options on the type of algorithm and amount of replicas needed for erasure coded back ends.

  • CRUSH Extension - This work seeks to extend the powerful CRUSH algorithm to allow for more flexible and tuneable object placement within a Ceph cluster.

Ceph Ecosystem is Vibrant and Growing
Ceph adoption increased sharply in 2013, as it became the de-facto storage platform for service providers and enterprises deploying public or private clouds, particularly alongside OpenStack. A recent OpenStack User Survey revealed Ceph as the most popular option for distributed block storage among OpenStack users.

"Over the past few years, we've watched the Ceph community become larger and more diverse," said Patrick McGarry, Director of Community at Inktank, Inc. "As more developers become active contributors to Ceph, the list of features and speed with which they are delivered will accelerate. Ceph already delivers a platform that is incomparable to other solutions, and we expect that as this rate of innovation continues to grow, other solutions will find it difficult to keep up."

In response to growing demand for education on becoming a Ceph expert, Inktank recently launched Inktank University, a practical training program designed to meet the education needs of Inktank customers and the Ceph community. The courses, offered both virtually and in-person, allow anyone to learn the implementation, operation and maintenance of Ceph systems in an instructor-led classroom setting.
