Worst Roads - It's in Your Hands: Seventh Annual Campaign Launches Next Week

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 6, 2009) - CAA's seventh annual Worst Roads Campaign is set to launch next week. This year's theme - "It's in your hands" - signifies the importance of voicing concerns when it comes to the condition of Ontario roads.

"CAA North & East Ontario remains dedicated to encouraging municipalities to ensure funding is in place to repair and maintain Ontario roads," said Korey Kennedy, Manager of Public & Government Affairs for CAANEO. "The Worst Roads Campaign allows individuals to speak up regarding the poor conditions of roads they travel everyday, and it encourages political representatives to take action to improve those conditions."

This year's campaign, launching August 12, is aimed at pressuring municipalities to use the money that has been set aside by both the federal and provincial governments for major road infrastructure projects.

Since its inception in 2003, the Ontario Worst Roads Campaign has prompted municipalities to take or commit to take action to fix 90% of the worst roads named to the campaign's annual top 20 list. Rehabilitation plans have been laid out for three North & East Ontario roads on last year's top 20 list.

Statistics show bad roads endanger all road users including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. According to Transport Canada, over 350 fatalities and 25,000 injuries each year can be directly related to poor roads.

A worst road could mean anything from a side street riddled with fissures and cracks, a major road that is continually congested, a bridge that is crumbling or a highway full of potholes. It's up to the public to make sure their concerns are heard and action is taken to improve road conditions.

The campaign, sponsored by, CAA North & East Ontario, CAA Niagra, CAA South Central Ontario, CAA Insurance and the Ontario Road Builders' Association, will take its message across Ontario during the seven-week campaign visiting more than thirty communities across the province.

Balloting opens August 12, 2009 and will conclude September 30, 2009. Ontarians will have the opportunity to vote for Ontario's worst road at CAA travel centres, online, and in select CAA approved garages. A media tour is planned for the last week of August, with stops in twelve municipalities throughout North & East Ontario.
