WPC's FirstPass Validates Transaction Processing to Meet Fast Approaching HIPAA 5010 Enforcement Deadline

Solution Removes the Pain of Potential Errors Disrupting Revenue Cycle Operations

NASHVILLE, TN--(Marketwire - May 21, 2012) - With a little over a month to go, healthcare organizations struggling to implement new HIPAA 5010 standards can immediately use WPC's FirstPass™ Version 3 solution to meet the compliance deadline. The Windows desktop application tests and validates whether the data and format of the syntactical structure of X12 claims and other transactions adhere to current HIPAA 5010 standards. It identifies and reduces claims errors, denials and subsequent payment delays quickly to complete 5010 preparations before the new enforcement date of July 1st.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) stated that it will not enforce the use of the 5010 transaction standard through June 30, 2012, which makes July 1, 2012 the first day that enforcement begins. Many providers such as hospitals, health systems and physician practices along with several state Medicaid agencies are reportedly lagging behind in 5010 preparations.

"Despite the second granted extension of an additional three months, many organizations are knee-deep dealing with substantial and complex problems already negatively affecting their revenue cycle," said WPC Product Manager Kent Chadwick. "WPC's FirstPass is an affordable tool designed to validate their 5010 EDI standard transactions and identify exactly when and where trading partners are causing processing issues."

FirstPass helps users spot and resolve both structural and detailed errors in their EDI transactions. It checks the validity of the loop, segment or data element where innumerable variations are possible; tests all HIPAA 5010 files both in an organization's initial coding and later revisions to their X12 version 5010 transaction programming; and ensures an organization's 5010 billing design meets validation rules.

Since FirstPass is a desktop application, customers do not have to send their production transactions outside their IT environment for analysis and validation. The protected health information (PHI) within these transactions can be maintained by the organization.

"Our customers such as Medicaid agencies, hospitals, health systems, solo and group physician practices and software vendors like FirstPass's low cost, ease of use and PHI protection," said Chadwick. "They have been using the tool for years since its original release for validating the HIPAA X12N 4010 standard. Many continue to rely on FirstPass to improve the productivity and responsiveness of their line staff charged with handling all transaction issues."

WPC's FirstPass Version 3 can be purchased through The solution includes sample test files for both original and errata versions of the HIPAA-mandated 5010 transactions. Healthcare organizations are welcomed to test the complete application with a free 10-day trial.
