Writing Institute Empowers Educators to Meet Challenging State Standards

Education Experts From The Leadership and Learning Center Directly Arm Educators With Effective Writing Strategies to Master Challenging Curricula and Help Low Achievers Meet State Standards in All Subjects

ENGLEWOOD, CO--(Marketwire - September 9, 2010) -  Dr. Douglas B. Reeves and The Leadership and Learning Center, a premier provider of solutions for educators and school leaders, invite you to experience The Writing Institute. The Institute will be held at the Hyatt Regency Woodfield-Schaumburg on Oct. 21 and 22, 2010, in Chicago, Ill. "Effective writing skills have clearly been shown to directly improve reading comprehension and student performance in social studies, science and mathematics," stated Founder Dr. Douglas B. Reeves.

Join renowned writing experts Bonnie Bishop, Alice Greiner, and Angela Peery, who will guide and empower you through this hands-on and highly interactive experience. The topics covered include:

  • Implement research-based writing strategies to help students meet challenging state academic standards
  • Increase the skill and comfort level of content-area teachers to use writing to advance comprehension and improve student engagement
  • Accelerate academic achievement for English Language Learners (ELL)
  • Plan and improve ELL instruction; address listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills
  • Implement a school-wide approach to assigning and assessing writing in all content areas

"The Writing Institute will present a unique opportunity to share classroom experiences, research and advanced writing tools," stated Bonnie Bishop, professional development associate with The Leadership and Learning Center. "In order to maximize learning among students, teachers must plan effective lessons. That is why the Writing Institute is packed with the latest and most effective writing practices for educators."

Bishop has presented to teachers on regional and national levels and is recognized for her expertise in Balanced Literacy, Assessment and Bridging the Academic Achievement Gap for English Learners. Dr. Peery, who is a senior professional development associate at The Leadership and Learning Center, has years of experience as a teacher, researcher and writer. In particular, she helped the South Carolina Department of Education as an instructional coach at low-achieving middle schools help raise student proficiency in writing. Greiner's expertise comes from helping to improve the writing techniques of thousands of students during her 23 years in the classroom.

"The Leadership and Learning Center's Writing Institute offers interactive learning sessions, packed with new research and effective writing strategies that are usable the minute you step back into your classroom," said Bishop. "This seminar is ultimately inspired by the three principled reasons we, as educators, have students practice writing skills -- higher engagement; increased critical thinking; and the demonstration of deep, subject-area understanding."

The Writing Institute incorporates strategies and practices that have consistently and significantly raised high-stakes assessment scores in districts with a wide variety of demographics, including 90/90/90 Schools™. The institute will also benefit those who incorporate some writing in their classes but who simply wish to increase their overall expertise.

"The Writing Institute I attended was so valuable that I used the strategies in class the day I returned! I shared one of the strategies with new teachers in two different workshops, and they reported using it immediately as well. I've used multiple strategies over the last two weeks, and students report liking the strategies, and scores were up," said Pauline Patrick, a teacher at Minnetonka High School, Minn.
