WSIB should aim to cover all construction workers

Labour Minister Peters on right track with announcement of consultation on leveling the playing field in the construction industry. Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 28, 2006) - The Council of Ontario Construction Associations (COCA) and the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario announced their support of today's announcement by Labour Minister Steve Peters to begin consultations on providing Workplace Health and Safety coverage for all workers in Ontario's construction industry.

"This announcement by Minister Peters to consider WSIB coverage of all construction workers is an important step toward safer workplaces and equity on WSIB premiums," said COCA President David Frame. "Movement on this issue is long overdue," said Alex Lolua, Director of Government Relations for the Ontario Building Trades. "This is a step in the right direction" he added.

The issue of who is covered by WSIB premiums is important for many reasons. It creates equality in competing when all contractors have the same costs. This change will also help reduce overall rates as the pool of contributors is expanded. It will allow for a greater emphasis to be placed on health and safety, as more accurate injury data will now be collected. Finally, this measure will target the underground economy, as more emphasis is placed on registering all contractors leading to greater revenues, which could be used for things like infrastructure, health care and education.

"Once the consultation process is complete, I hope the Minister will act quickly to fix this problem in the construction industry," stated Lolua. "This is an important step in leveling the playing field for all who work in the industry," added Frame.

COCA is the provincial body that represents construction associations across Ontario. The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario is an umbrella organization that represents over 100,000 unionized workers.
