WWF-Canada: Balancing Conservation and Development in Northern Ontario

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 14, 2008) - Today, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the Ontario government's commitment to balance conservation and development interests in Northern Ontario.

WWF-Canada is available for comment on the Premier's statement. WWF-Canada believes:

- First Nations must have a central role in decision-making about northern lands and waters;

- Industry, including mining and forestry, should benefit from long-term, stable land use allocations;

- Conservation of lands, waters and wildlife, including the threatened woodland caribou, is best addressed before industrial permitting, so that the most important natural areas are protected first.
