WWF-Canada: Media Advisory-Future of Cod on the Newfoundland Grand Banks

Decisions in Spain Next Week Could Set Cod on the Path to Recovery or Extinction

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 18, 2008) -

Friday, September 19, 2008
11:00 AM ADT

WWF-Canada will hold a media briefing outlining the proper management practices that the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) needs to put in place to ensure cod recovery and the protection of vulnerable ecosystems. These decisions are coming at a critical time, as a pulse of young cod are poised to contribute to the recovery of stocks on the southern Grand Banks.

NAFO will hold its Annual Meeting in Vigo, Spain from September 22-26. During these meetings, WWF is looking for NAFO to sanction a series of proposed measures, including the closure of areas where bottom fishing adversely affects vulnerable ecosystems, and the setting of total allowable catches (TACs) that are in line with scientific advice in order to reduce bycatch of cod and other stocks under moratoria.

Speaking will be:

Marty King, Director, Atlantic, WWF-Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia
Dr. Robert Rangeley, Vice President, Atlantic, WWF-Canada from Brussels, Belgium

Media may attend the briefing in our office at:

5251 Duke Street
Suite 1202
Halifax, Nova Scotia

If unable to attend in person, media may participate by conference call (1-866-365-4406 access code: 9163236). A press release will follow the briefing.
