Wyoming Land Auction: Grazing Ranch Near Casper to Sell Nov. 4

POWDER RIVER, WY--(Marketwire - September 27, 2010) - Natrona County's 92,312-acre Big West Ranch will sell at auction Thursday, Nov. 4, in one of the area's largest land auctions in history. The grass ranch, located northwest of Casper, has a carrying capacity of more than 1,000 animal units.

"When it comes to authentic western ranches, this one has it all -- abundant water, 18 separate pastures, and an amazingly diverse landscape of mountain foothills, meadows, canyons, buttes and breaks for excellent protection of livestock. The landscape also provides an ideal habitat for the substantial populations of wildlife," said Scott Shuman, of Westchester Auctions, which is marketing the property in cooperation with Musser Brothers Inc., of Cody, and Ranch Marketing Associates, of Colorado.

The land will sell in 14 tracts, ranging from 80 to 20,852 acres. It includes 11,240 deeded acres, 60,958 acres leased from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and 18,154 acres leased from the state, as well as 1,960 acres under private leases.

The ranch is set on one contiguous block, 20 miles east-to-west and 10 miles north-to-south, at the southern tip of the Bighorn Mountains.

"Along with the water, the ranch has a tremendous amount of grass to really pack on the pounds. The grazing allotment has no on/off dates, so the owner can rotate cattle as needed with no restrictions," said Shuman. "This is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the premier working ranches in the United States."

The land also has its share of history, according to Shuman. "Throughout the property, you'll see teepee rings and old homesteader cabins. Indeed, the land looks a great deal like it did a century ago. The famous Hole in the Wall where Butch and Sundance planned their capers is nearby," he said.

The auction will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4. Auction personnel will be available to meet with prospective bidders and provide information from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26.
