Wyse Brings Automatic Configuration to Windows-Based Thin Clients

Wyse WCM Software and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager Compatibility Unifies Device Management

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 13, 2012) - Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced support for customers with a Microsoft management strategy yet desire additional automated configuration of thin clients.

Microsoft SCCM compatibility
Wyse offers solutions for organizations that use Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to manage their Windows desktops and servers. Administrators can use SCCM with the Windows Embedded Device Manager (WEDM) product to manage updates and patches to supported Wyse Windows Embedded-based thin clients with management of the write filter, simplifying the process for IT admins to update these devices.

In a Microsoft authored case study, Wyse is positioned as always looking for new ways to improve the customer experience, reduce management costs, and differentiate its products. For more details on how this is done with the integration of WEDM and SCCM within Wyse's solution portfolio, please visit this Microsoft case study.

With the introduction of Windows Embedded Device Manager, Microsoft has extended the capabilities of System Center Configuration Manager to fully manage devices running Windows Embedded operating systems. Now enterprises can deploy, assess, and update Windows Embedded devices -- specifically Wyse thin clients, across a variety of environments, including point of service, kiosks, and digital signage.

"As a pioneer in the cloud client computing market, Wyse has continued to offer customers flexibility in selecting the best virtualization and management solutions that meet their needs," said Param Desai, Senior Director, Product Management at Wyse. "Offering Wyse customers who want a single management solution to manage servers, PC's, and embedded devices, including thin clients, using Windows Embedded Device Manager with System Center Configuration Manager, continues to extend this same flexibility."

Additionally, Wyse Configuration Manager (WCM) is an innovative self-configuring client technology for Wyse-enhanced Windows Embedded thin clients in virtual desktop environments. WCM goes beyond anything available in the market today, enabling IT administrators to automate thin client rollouts, and simplify post-rollout configuration management. It supports settings for remote desktops, device configuration and operating system configuration, including time zones, Internet Explorer favorites and trusted sites, and keyboard language.

"There is always a balance to strike as IT teams want automatic device configuration and many end users want some degree of local customization," according to Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. "Wyse Configuration Manager gives IT teams the best of both worlds by reducing the device management at the data center without compromising end-user customization."

In addition to this vast streamlining of the desktop configuration and deployment process, Wyse WCM 1.1 adds multiple important new features, including:

  • Adaptability. Even broader Windows platform support, now including Windows Embedded Standard 2009 in addition to Windows Embedded Standard 7.
  • Simplicity. Hands off, on the fly configuration of individual thin clients at login time, including no network management platform required for configuration. WCM is easy to install and eliminates re-imaging when any of the settings need to be changed.
  • Scalability. Hundreds or even many thousands of thin clients can be easily configured.
  • Flexibility. Thin client configurations can be tailored to the varying needs of diverse departments or groups, with support for many non-English languages.
  • Security. Enhance security with enable/disable of USB mass storage, Internet Explorer trusted sites and firewall settings.
  • Usability. Internet Explorer Kiosk mode (full-screen web page access), in addition to the existing auto start for VMware View, Citrix and RDP clients.
