Xandros Launches First Netbook Experience on ARM Technology-Based Mobile Devices

Compelling Apps on Low-Powered ARM Devices Open New Opportunities for Mobile OEMs and Carriers

BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwire - February 16, 2009) - Mobile World Congress -- Xandros, Inc. today announced a turnkey software solution with a new, compelling user experience for ARM® technology-based netbooks and other low-powered Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). The Xandros solution enables mobile OEM vendors and communications carriers to bring the full power of desktop computing to mobile devices with fast boot, long battery life, and always-on 3G networking. The Debian Linux-based system also enables mobile phone OEMs to create new products incorporating a rich set of user capabilities. About 98 percent of the more than a billion mobile phones sold each year use at least one ARM CPU, according to mobile and wireless industry analysts the Linley Group.

The Xandros solution for makers of ARM technology-based netbooks and other MIDs comes with tools to customize its functions and interface for specific markets and user demographics. It also includes a unique, custom brandable online Application Store for access to software, games, multimedia and web applications, enabling one-time and recurring revenue streams for OEMs, service providers and carriers. Full-featured user applications include a browser, push-based email, PIM, instant messaging, a photo viewer, a media player, and an office suite to create and edit Microsoft Office documents. All applications support both keyboards and touch screens, and exhibit consistent appearances and behaviors.

"Xandros was at the forefront of the netbook phenomenon in using Open Source solutions to provide customized user experiences. We are excited to have Xandros on board to create innovative netbook solutions built and optimized for latest ARM technology and platforms," said Bob Morris, director of Mobile Computing, ARM. "With the generation of always-on netbook computers, Xandros enables a new range of applications and user experiences."

"Our model of success is the iPhone or Palm Pre, not the windows desktop. While we work with Windows, that doesn't mean we make our applications look or act like Windows," said Andreas Typaldos, CEO of Xandros. "Powerful and efficient ARM technology-based processors have enabled Xandros to design a new solution that combines the capabilities of a mobile phone with those of desktop computing in one revolutionary, lightweight platform. OEMs can reach new markets, while carriers can create recurring revenue streams through engaging mobile devices and integrated services."

Showcased at Mobile World Congress, February 16-19

The new Xandros solution for ARM will be showcased at Qualcomm's booth # 8B53 (8) at Mobile World Congress, February 16-19, 2009, Fira Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain.
