MANCHESTER, NH--(Marketwired - May 2, 2014) - Polymer bead-cleaning pioneer Xeros has won two prestigious awards, on different sides of the Atlantic in a single evening.
The company won Bronze in the Energy/Sustainability category for its virtually waterless commercial laundry system at the Edison Awards 2014 in San Francisco, CA (one of the most prestigious accolades a company can receive in innovation and business).
In addition Xeros was named University Spin-Out of the Year in the New Energy & Cleantech Awards 2014, in London, which recognize companies that have played a pivotal role in the development of the green energy and cleantech industries.
Xeros' patented polymer bead-cleaning system is currently being used in commercial washing machines, where it cuts water use by up to 80%, reduces energy usage by up to 50% and cuts detergent use by up to 50%. The company has developed a late-stage prototype for a domestic bead-cleaning washing machine and is also developing bead-cleaning for leather processing and other applications.
The latest awards join a growing list of accolades that Xeros has received for its work developing its bead-cleaning technology, including a 2014 BusinessGreen Leaders Award, and a 2014 NorthernTech Award. In 2013, Xeros secured two awards from the Rushlight Awards -- the Sustainable Manufacturing & Services Award as well as the Environmental Management Award.
Bill Westwater, CEO, Xeros stated: "It is always special for the company to be recognized as a green game-changer with such prestigious awards. However, to win two awards, on the same night, in San Francisco and London, is certainly a first for Xeros. It's a testament to the global relevance of Xeros bead cleaning and the fantastic efforts from Xeros teams in both the US and the UK."
Jonathan Benjamin, president, Xeros North America stated: "Polymer bead cleaning is the first real innovation in the laundry industry in more than 60 years. The Xeros washing system replaces up to 80% of the water used with traditional washing machines with polymer beads and washes fabrics at lower temperatures with superior cleaning results. It is revolutionising an entire water and energy dependent industry, enabling it to become greener, less dependent on our natural resources and to have minimal impact on our environment."
Frank Bonafilia, Edison Awards' executive director stated: "This award recognises Xeros as a true innovator in energy and sustainability. Edison Award winners represent the most innovative and game‐changing products and services of the year."
With the Xeros Commercial Laundry System, industrial laundries, hotels, fitness centers, and dry cleaners deliver superior cleaning results using polymer bead technology as compared to traditional "soap and water" methods. The Xeros system includes a specially-designed washing machine that uses polymer beads in place of large amounts of hot water to remove stains from fabrics.
By combining the beads' molecular structure with a small amount of a proprietary detergent solution, dirt from soiled items is attracted and absorbed by the beads, producing cleaner results. The reusable beads have a lifespan of hundreds of washes before being collected and recycled for reintroduction into the polymer supply chain.
