Xiotech Delivers VMware vSphere Management of ISE Storage, Further Unlocks Virtualization Potential

ISE Manager: vSphere Edition Enables Simple, Unified Storage and Server Management Without Sacrificing Precision

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN--(Marketwire - December 6, 2010) - Xiotech Corporation, the ISE Company, today announced ISE Manager: vSphere Edition. The new plug-in for VMware vSphere clients enables granular provisioning, monitoring and management of the company's ISE storage blades from within the familiar vSphere interface. In doing so, it also removes the cost and added complexity of separate storage management software.

Virtualization optimizes compute resources, enabling the addition or disposal of incremental compute resources simply and nondisruptively in a way that maximizes infrastructure investments. ISE is the first storage technology that allows customers to manage their storage resources in a similar fashion. ISE storage blades are only 3U in height (5.25"), have extreme performance characteristics to meet the high-I/O needs of consolidation, offer lower acquisition costs than traditional network storage systems and feature greater investment protection with a zero-touch, five-year, 24X7 hardware warranty.

With the addition of Xiotech ISE Manager: vSphere Edition, a new ISE storage blade management plug-in for VMware vSphere, administrators gain full instrumentation for ISE storage blades, storage cloud creation and management, automated DataStore and VM volume provisioning automation, high-availability multipath and cluster best-practice integration, and expert-level storage provisioning features. Key benefits of this new integration include:

  • Dynamic, Performance-Driven Clouds -- Enables deployment, provisioning and expansion of ISE storage as consolidated pools of storage instead of individual devices - either within the same datacenter or across datacenters. This creates dynamic, performance-driven storage clouds for applications such as desktop virtualization.
  • Simplified Provisioning and Capacity Deployment -- Tight integration with VMware and full-feature support reduce what used to take a dozen or more steps across the storage system, server and virtual/physical machine down to a simple three-click process, all within the VMware vSphere Client.
  • Real-Time Storage Performance Dashboard -- ISE Manager: vSphere Edition collects telemetry data from ISE storage and reports it at a granular level. This allows users to avoid bottlenecks, allocate resources more effectively, and create more accurate forecasts for storage needs.

In Q1 2011, Xiotech will also deliver storage offload integration between ISE and VMware's vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI). The latest version of vSphere, 4.1, introduced VAAI to deliver storage offload processing that saves time, reduces CPU and storage I/O load on ESX hosts. Integrated ISE operations will include full copy for Storage vMotion, write zero improvements to reduce the time it takes to initialize any given VMDK and scaling lock management for VMFS.

"ISE was designed to allow customers and applications full access to their storage however, whenever, and from wherever they choose, all in the name of providing the highest performance and scalability," said Steve Sicola, CTO at Xiotech. "Through our development of the CorteX API and work with partners like VMware, we continue to advance toward this goal, and break down the performance barriers associated with legacy, controller-based storage systems. And we're excited to deliver VAAI support in the New Year, providing organizations with a flexible, high-performance foundation to leverage for their cloud computing initiatives."

In addition to the vSphere plug-in, Xiotech provides a storage replication adapter specifically developed to integrate and automate Xiotech's data protection and recovery features such as volume copy, mirrors, snapshots, synchronous replication, and asynchronous replication with VMware's vCenter Site Recovery Manager software. VMware's vCenter Site Recovery Manager provides methods to automatically employ policies for automated disaster recovery between physical sites. A storage replication adapter is currently available for Xiotech's Emprise 7000 storage controller, while an adapter for the Emprise 9000 storage controller will be available in Q1 2011.

In conjunction with integration with VMware's vCenter Site Recovery Manager, Xiotech's Virtual View reduces the time to verify all storage has been cutover and is online at the recovery site. After SRM operations have been executed, the CorteX API provides Virtual View with real-time feedback for a consolidated view of DataStore and ISE storage reassignments during failover and fail-back processes.
