Xirrus Delivers High-Performance Wireless Service to More Than 7,500 Attendees at Black Hat USA 2013

Leading High-Tech Information Security Conference, Infamous for Attacks and Rogue Activity, Demanded Failsafe Security

THOUSAND OAKS, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 7, 2013) - Xirrus, the leading provider of high-performance networks, today announced that it replaced Aruba Networks as provider of the wireless network and services for Black Hat USA 2013.  Xirrus completed its first year providing high-performance wireless service and ironclad security for Black Hat and for over 7,500 attendees equipped with smartphones, laptops, and tablets.  Black Hat, whose network has become known for withstanding malicious attacks and intrusions, entrusted its wireless network to Xirrus based on its record of providing superior security, as well as scalable capacity and coverage, for high-profile events and conventions around the world.  Black Hat USA 2013 took place July 27-Aug. 1 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

The network, monitored by the Xirrus Management System, consisting of 12 Xirrus dual-radio XR-520 access points and 24 eight-radio XR-4830 Wireless Arrays, was deployed in less than 24 hours.

Additionally, the network:

  • Provided event-wide coverage for thousands of devices
  • Managed traffic flow across the network, which witnessed nearly equal amounts of rogue and legitimate traffic during Black Hat Training
  • Thwarted thousands of spoofed SSID and other wireless attacks, including null probe responses, duration attacks, probe floods and beacon floods

"Black Hat is infamous for hosting a hostile network," says Mike Rydalch, principal technologist at Xirrus. "At no other event do we see so many rogue devices and network attacks simultaneously. In environments like this, the unique design of Xirrus APs and Wireless Arrays comes into play: we control traffic at the network edge, and use individual, distributed controllers to prevent single points of failure. In addition, with the Xirrus Mananagement System, we are able to actively monitor the network and take corrective action when needed. Pairing our distinct architecture with this level of transparency allows the network to function optimally."

"Black Hat was our opportunity to prove to the security community that Xirrus meets the challenges of providing a secure high-performance network under the most demanding conditions," says Steven Wastie, chief marketing officer of Xirrus. "We did that by preventing a record level of malicious activity, and giving thousands of attendees seamless access and consistent performance; we demonstrated that there is no vendor better suited than Xirrus to provide Black Hat attendees with the infrastructure they need to continue shaping the security industry."
