Gracenote Link Enables Users to Integrate All of Their Music With Yahoo's Vast Trove of Music Content

EMERYVILLE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 10, 2005 -- Gracenote®, a leader in global digital entertainment technology, today announced that Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO) has adopted Gracenote MusicID(SM) and Gracenote Link(SM) to provide a combined music identification and content integration service for the Yahoo! Music Engine. Using Yahoo! Music Engine with Gracenote MusicID, consumers will be able to identify all types of music in their collections, including individual digital music files already on their PC or tracks on a CD. Once files have been identified, Gracenote Link enables users to easily access any of Yahoo's content that relates to their music, such as "Artist of the Month," "Music Videos," artist information and more; Link can also be used in conjunction with Yahoo's user-selected music preferences to provide accurate music recommendations based on artists or albums in existing music collections.

The Yahoo! Music Engine will utilize Gracenote's first-of-a-kind application of waveform fingerprinting technology, which enables correct identification of individual tracks regardless of original source or file name. Providing highly accurate results, Gracenote's waveform technology is delivered using a combination of fingerprint and text matching technologies. This identification method is an important step for Gracenote Link, which allows Yahoo users to integrate digital music from their existing music collections alongside any new content they may add from the Yahoo service. Gracenote's technology is aimed at making digital music easier to use: Currently, users of digital music stores struggle with inconsistent labeling of tracks, resulting from new files being added to their existing collections using differing formats.

"We feel that providing a high quality solution for helping our customers identify and manage their digital music is an important part of our offering," stated David Goldberg, VP & General Manager, Music at Yahoo!. "Our customers get their music from many different sources: CDs, download stores, artist sites, etc., and the data from each source is inconsistent and often incomplete. By using Gracenote MusicID, users of Yahoo! Music Engine will have a highly organized music library, resulting in an easier-to-use and more satisfying music experience."

The Consumer Experience of Yahoo! Music Engine with Gracenote:

By offering access to information on over 3.5 million CDs, and 44.5 million individual music tracks, Gracenote is able to provide Yahoo! Music Engine users with the world's largest and most comprehensive database of music metadata. Gracenote's global media database contains detailed information on music from 213 countries/territories and in 80 different languages.

Today, consumers often find their collections complicated and hard to use: For example, music by The Rolling Stones may show up as four different artists: "Rolling Stones," "The Rolling Stones," "The Stones," as well as the all-too-common, "Unknown." Gracenote MusicID solves this issue in two steps: First, the music is identified using a combination of the industry's leading CD identification solution (formerly called CDDB(SM)), with waveform fingerprinting technology for individual tracks. Once each track is correctly identified, MusicID accesses Gracenote's Media Database and delivers accurate and consistent information such as: track, artist, and album names and genre classifications. By organizing music information in a consistent way, an entire collection can be transformed into a fully functional digital music library.

"Yahoo! Music Engine is raising the bar for the industry," stated Craig Palmer, president and CEO for Gracenote. "As digital files proliferate Yahoo! Music Engine with Gracenote MusicID is the first combined complete digital music solution designed to solve the problem of inconsistent, incorrect and missing metadata, giving consumers the ultimate solution to manage and enjoy their music."
