Yamaha Rhino Dangers on CBS News: Cory Watson Crowder and DeGaris Accuses Yamaha of Neglecting Promised Safety Repairs

BIRMINGHAM, AL--(Marketwire - August 5, 2009) - CBS Evening News reported on safety problems with the popular Yamaha Rhino off-road vehicle in an investigative report televised August 4, 2009. The report revealing deaths and injuries attributed to Rhino problems came months after Yamaha Motor Corp USA recalled the Yamaha Rhino and promised to provide materials for safety repairs. In March, Yamaha and the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled some 150 thousand vehicles and warned Rhino owners not to operate their vehicles until taking them into a dealership for repairs and safety modifications. But according to attorney Jason Shamblin of Cory Watson Crowder and DeGaris law firm, Rhino dealers are not being provided with the equipment necessary to make the repairs.

"It's been months, and the owners can't get their Rhinos 'fixed,' but now the owners who are financing their Rhinos are facing new problems. They have to keep making the payments on these expensive toys they can't use because Yamaha won't give dealers the equipment they need to repair the vehicles and make them safer," said Shamblin, who represents more than 150 Rhino victims. The Yamaha Rhino recall came after more than 46 deaths and hundreds of catastrophic injuries were reported in Rhino accidents.

"Yamaha has known of these serious safety threats for years, but has repeatedly failed to admit there's a problem. Now that they have agreed to make repairs, they're failing to follow through," said Shamblin. Lawsuits charge the Yamaha Rhino has serious design flaws that can lead to deadly accidents even when the vehicles are operated at low speed on flat terrain. Lawsuits filed against Yamaha allege the Rhino is prone to rollover accidents, and because of defects in its design, may result in broken or crushed arms, legs, feet, and ankles.

Shamblin says Cory Watson Crowder and DeGaris represents one hundred fifty people injured or killed in Rhino accidents. "Hundreds of people have suffered devastating, life-changing injuries and many have died because of the design defects in the Yamaha Rhino," said Shamblin, who notes that the lawsuits allege Yamaha knew of the dangers, yet failed to make the Rhino safe.
