Yammer "2.0" Launches a Secure Social Network for Enterprises

Over 80,000 Companies to Immediately Benefit From New Applications

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 28, 2010) - In its biggest product release since launching two years ago, Yammer, Inc. today released a new "2.0" version of its site with applications as the centerpiece. The addition of an application platform evolves the onetime leader in enterprise microblogging into a full-fledged enterprise social network. The new Yammer product is immediately available to its more than 80,000 customers including more than 80% of the Fortune 500. New functionality includes:

  • Applications
    • Polls -- Tap the wisdom of crowds by quickly and easily creating a poll and asking co-workers to identify the best option. See real-time updates as the votes come in.
    • Events -- Invite co-workers to company or group events and track responses. Download events into Microsoft Outlook or Google calendar.
    • Links -- Share URLs with co-workers in a form that displays web content such as videos and images inline.
  • Topics -- Tag content with topics, enabling better collection and curation of conversations and data.
  • Revamped User Interface -- Intuitive navigation that supports expanded functionality. 
  • Direct Messages -- Communicate privately with one or multiple colleagues and add participants to the conversation at any point.
  • Presence -- See who is online now and how they are connected to Yammer (i.e. website, the desktop client or a mobile client.)
  • Enhanced Analytics -- Provides network administrators with interactive charts to track engagement in their network.

Additionally, the following features built on the new Yammer platform are now in private beta:

  • Questions -- Ask co-workers and quickly find answers in a searchable knowledgebase.
  • Ideas -- Find and categorize the best ideas in your company. Employees rank ideas through voting.
  • Tasks -- Quickly assign a task resulting from a conversation and track its completion.
  • Translation -- Translate Yammer messages into over 100 different languages.
  • Chat -- Chat with one or multiple colleagues. Add an additional participant to a chat conversation at any time.

The Yammer Platform
Yammer developed its new applications on its own platform using no proprietary programming languages. While other platforms allow for static messages in the feed, Yammer's platform uniquely enables dynamic content that updates in real-time. For example, a user can see real-time updates to polls in the message feed. Yammer's own applications will be open sourced so that developers can utilize them as examples.

Third-Party Applications
As part of the private beta, several third-party developers are integrating their applications with Yammer. The following applications will be available to customers this week:

  • Crocodoc for Document Mark Up and Review -- Collaboratively highlight and comment on PDFs, Word documents, images and other files that are attached to Yammer messages.
  • Zendesk for Customer Support -- Attach a Zendesk ticket or knowledge base article to a Yammer message so that all key stakeholders can collaborate and resolve trouble tickets quickly.

The following applications are in development:

  • for Enterprise Content Management -- Share files from's leading cloud content management solution in Yammer messages.
  • Expensify for Online Expense Report Management -- Notify the appropriate people when an expense report requires action.
  • Lithium for Social Customer Relationship Management (SCRM) -- Enable employees to share and discuss feedback from brand influencer and customer conversations that take place in Lithium's leading customer community solutions.
