Yammer Announces New Platform and Applications for Enterprise Social Networking

Enterprise Social Networks Will Change the Way We Work

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 2, 2010) - Yammer, Inc. today announced that it will launch an application platform that will transform its leading enterprise microblogging solution into a full-fledged enterprise social network. The first applications developed on the platform -- including Polls, Events, and Links -- are already in private beta with select customers and will be released at the end of this month.

Yammer's Enterprise Social Network
Yammer is already designed as a broad, horizontal platform that the entire company can use to communicate in real time. Applications will be built around the real-time feed turning everyday conversations into structured knowledge. Upcoming applications include:

  • Activity Stream -- View stories about co-worker actions in their enterprise apps (both on and off Yammer) and follow content in addition to people.
  • Chat -- Chat with other users or create a group chat room.
  • Events -- Invite co-workers to company or group events and track responses. Attendees can download the event into their calendar.
  • Ideas -- Find and categorize the best ideas in your company. Employees rank ideas through voting.
  • Links -- Share URLs with co-workers in a form that previews the linked information.
  • Polls -- Tap the wisdom of crowds by quickly and easily creating a poll and asking co-workers to identify the best option.
  • Questions -- Ask co-workers and quickly find answers in a searchable knowledgebase.
  • Tasks -- Quickly assign a task resulting from a conversation and track its completion.
  • Topics -- Tag content with topics, enabling better collection and curation of conversations and data.

Third-Party Applications
In addition to releasing its own applications, Yammer's platform model will enable third-party developers to create new applications that Yammer customers can optionally install. The potential to reach corporate users at more than 80,000 companies, including 80% of the Fortune 500, will make it easier than ever before for new software-as-a-service applications to achieve distribution inside the enterprise. Yammer's platform will also allow established enterprise players -- from CRM tools to project management systems -- to easily integrate with Yammer so users have fewer places to go to find what they need.

By bringing social networking into the enterprise to improve internal communication, Yammer promises to fundamentally change the way people work. Some customers have already begun using Yammer applications in private beta and report the difference it makes:

Pricing and Availability
Like Yammer itself, applications will be based on a "freemium" model, where the basic version will be free to all users, with premium functionality available for a fee. The first set of Yammer's applications, including Polls, Events, and Links, will be generally available on September 28. Additional applications will be released shortly thereafter. Yammer plans to announce more details about its Fall Product Roadmap including its initial platform partners on September 28.
