Yellow Pages Group Encourages Support for Local Economies

Yellow Pages Print and Digital Products Are Key Revenue Generators for SMEs

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2010) - At a Montreal business conference held today by Les Affaires, Marc P. Tellier, President and CEO of Yellow Pages Group, reiterated the company's commitment to supporting local economies and helping Canada's small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) adapt to an increasingly digital world.

"Local businesses are the heart of our communities and account for over half of the Canadian workforce. Supporting nearby businesses and making local purchases helps create thriving communities and strong local economies," said Tellier.

A recent survey conducted by Angus Reid Public Opinion showed strong support for local SMEs with 93% of Canadians indicating they felt buying from SMEs was important and 90% of Canadians actually purchased goods and services at least once a week from their local SMEs.1

Tellier also underscored the value SMEs bring to communities and his company's commitment to ensuring thriving local communities. Yellow Pages Group provides a wide variety of performance media and marketing tools, both traditional and digital, to help deliver targeted local business results to consumers.

Yellow Pages Group's Environmental Commitment

As Canadians are adopting more and more digital ways to find local information, Yellow Pages Group now offers consumers the choice to opt out of receiving the print directory by completing the form at http://ypg.com/delivery or calling 1-800-268-5637. In June, the company announced it was no longer distributing the residential directory, also known as the "white pages", in seven Canadian markets, namely Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa-Gatineau, Montreal and Quebec City. They are now available only upon request.

All Yellow Pages directories, including their plastic wrap, are entirely recyclable and made from post-consumer fibres and waste wood from responsibly-managed forests (FSC-, SFI- or CSA-certified). Outdated editions can be disposed of as part of regular municipal recycling pickup.

Yellow Pages Group regularly encourages waste reduction and recycling efforts across Canada. The company works with provincial recycling councils nationwide and reminds Canadians to recycle their old directories once the new ones arrive at their doorstep. Currently, 85% of Canadians recycle their outdated phonebooks versus less than 70% recycling newspapers and less than 40% recycling general use paper.

"In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, the entire lifecycle of our directories is far less than many of our daily activities," said Tellier. "For instance, producing a 4L bag of milk that you buy in the grocery store emits three times the greenhouse gas emissions of the entire lifecycle of the average Yellow Pages directory."2
