Yellow Pages Group Warns Businesses About Fraudulent Solicitation in the Context of Fraud Prevention Month

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 17, 2011) - In the context of Fraud Prevention Month, Yellow Pages Group (YPG), Canada's leading performance media and marketing solutions company, reminds businesses to beware of fraudulent directory advertising solicitations. The company offers some advice and tips to help identify fraudulent solicitation and bogus bills from companies falsely posing as YPG.

Properly identifying the logo and brand name of Yellow Pages Group is the best way to screen fraudulent solicitation. YPG reminds businesses that there is only one real Yellow Pages™ directory that carries the Yellow Pages™ brand and Walking Fingers™ logo and design in Canada. YPG is the exclusive owner of these trademarks in the country. The proper YPG logo was refreshed in 2010: it features a modernized version of the iconic Walking Fingers™ within a unique pebble shape. The logo no longer features actual pages in the graphics which should make it easier for businesses to decipher between the real YPG and fraudulent solicitations. In addition, the original Walking Fingers™ are never used upside down.

Before buying any print, online or specialty directory advertising product, YPG encourages business to take the following steps:

  1. In person, ask to see the representative's business card and a copy of the current directory.

  2. On the phone, ask the promoter if he is authorized to represent Yellow Pages Group (or any other directory publisher in Canada). Don't hesitate to ask more questions about the product, web site, company, etc.

  3. Ask for written information about the directory distribution, circulation and features.

  4. Verify with your previous Yellow Pages Group representative that the company or representative contacting you is legitimate.

  5. Keep in mind that YPG's sales force never conducts business by sending unsolicited faxes

YPG works in close collaboration with the Competition Bureau of Canada and other authorities to address the issue of fraud and deter scammers from soliciting businesses. If advertisers have any questions regarding the legitimacy of a document, they can consult the YPG fact sheet developed to detect fraudulent communication, available on the company's advertisers' site at YellowPages.ca/360. Businesses can also contact Yellow Pages Group Client Services at 1-877-909-YELO (9356). Moreover, YPG recommends that businesses that have been victims of fraudulent solicitation contact the Competition Bureau of Canada, PhoneBusters or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre for assistance.
