Yorkton Rental Housing Project Complete With Assistance from Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan


YORKTON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - Feb. 23, 2016) - The Governments of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan, along with the City of Yorkton and Yorkton Housing Corporation (YHC), today announced the completion of 11 new affordable rental units for individuals with complex needs in Yorkton. Eleven individuals will enjoy a safe, quality home that is affordable and near support services. The project, undertaken by Yorkton Housing Corporation, was made possible by a joint investment from the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan.

The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Honourable Greg Ottenbreit, Minister of Rural and Remote Health and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Yorkton, on behalf of the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and His Worship Bob Maloney, Mayor of the City of Yorkton, made the announcement today.

Quick facts:

  • Located at 34 Tupper Avenue, this project consists of 11 new bachelor style units for rent to low income single adults who are unable to find or maintain secure housing without community support services.

  • The units are built near the downtown area to enable access to needed support services such as the laundromat, drug stores, medical treatment, grocery stores, and agencies that provide support. Each unit is 325 square feet (30.2 square metres).

  • Total capital cost was $1.5 million. The Federal and Provincial Governments, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), are jointly contributing approximately $1.1 million under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing (2011-2014) Agreement.

  • The Yorkton Housing Corporation contributed the funding balance of $478,529.

  • The Yorkton Housing Corporation was formed in 1959 to provide adequate, suitable and affordable housing to best meet the needs of the residents of Yorkton. YHC currently has a portfolio of 143 residential units.The name Fromm Manor is in honour of the late Brian Fromm who was born and raised in Yorkton. Brian was extremely involved in the community and took great pride in calling Yorkton his home. Many will remember Brian from his time with GX94 radio, his career with the Department of Social Services, his term as Mayor from 1985 to 1988, and his service on City Council from 1989 until his untimely death in 2002 at the age of 46.
