Yorktown Family Services to Honour Kelly and Michael Meighen

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 18, 2013) - Yorktown Family Services will honour Kelly and Michael Meighen for their outstanding philanthropic leadership by presenting them with Yorktown's prestigious Humanitarian Award for Community Service. Mr. and Mrs. Meighen are being recognized by Yorktown Family Services for their passionate commitment to bring positive change to communities in Toronto, Montreal, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The award will be presented at the 14th annual Yorktown Family Services Tribute Dinner in the company of more than 300 guests on Wednesday May 1, 2013 at Toronto's Acadian Court.

Suzette Arruda-Santos, Executive Director of Yorktown Family Services, explains "Kelly and Michael have generously committed their time and financial resources both personally and through the T. R. Meighen Foundation, to support a variety of community-based projects that provide stable housing, job training, education, and community services." Ms. Arruda-Santos adds, "Through their selfless dedication and effort they have improved the lives of countless Canadian children and families."

The Tribute Dinner will be a gala star-studded event as friends and colleagues join to honour Mr. and Mrs. Meighen. Antoni Cimolino, Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening which will include a silent auction, a musical tribute by the Stratford Festival and tributes by The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, The Honourable Jean Charest and Darrell Gregersen, President and CEO, CAMH Foundation.

The Yorktown Family Services Humanitarian Award for Community Service is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and has made a significant impact in improving the lives of children, youth, women and families in Canada. Past Award recipients include Don Tapscott and Ana Lopes, John Tory, Valerie Pringle, The Honourable Michael Kirby, Margot Franssen, The Honourable Margaret Norrie McCain, June Callwood, Barbara Hall, Charles S. Coffey O.C., Dr. Charles Pascal, The Honourable David Crombie, P.C., The Honourable Bob Rae and Arlene Perly Rae, and Fergy Brown.

Proceeds of the dinner will benefit Yorktown Family Services, a community based charity serving the former City of York and eastern Etobicoke where both risk and need are very high. Yorktown is comprised of a children's mental health centre, a shelter for abused women and also provides a range of innovative initiatives for at-risk youth designed to build leaders of tomorrow - community members who are involved, engaged and successful in one of Ontario's poorest and most culturally diverse communities.
