Shahed is a twelve-year-old Iranian hungry for the extravagant delights of the West. But while Dad, the high-rolling operator, squanders the family money on parties, Shahed's lucky to find a coin on the street. When the sensuous Houri enters their lives, the boy turns to theft and guile for a taste of forbidden pleasures. He takes his cues from fools, fanatics and hustlers, eccentric denizens of his neighborhood in the days of the Shah.

Fourteen years later, Shahed, returning to Tehran from America to lay his father's ghost to rest, witnesses what the Revolution has done to his childhood world. Surrounded by the work of militant fundamentalists -- repression, fear, public executions -- he sets out to reclaim the past.

Loosely based on the author's true story, "Houri" opens a window on the recent history of a powerful Islamic nation, and how its people survive in an authoritarian state. In a tale told by a disenchanted expatriate, it portrays the lives of impoverished Iranians with unflinching realism, dark humor and irony.

"Houri" is available in bookstores around the country, as well as online at,, and
