Young Leaders Develop Global Competencies and Social Responsibility in Emerging Markets-Export Development Canada and AIESEC

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 10, 2014) - AIESEC Canada and Export Development Canada (EDC) have partnered since 1997 with the common goal of developing globally-minded and socially responsible youth.

The recent "Canadian Youth Voice" survey of over 1,300 students conducted by AIESEC Canada and Leger - The Research Intelligence Group shows that 55% of Canadian youth values a work culture that provides a strong learning and development potential or the opportunity to have an impact, reflecting the increasing importance of social responsibility among youth in Canada.

"Our partnership with AIESEC is designed to develop a student base that is more socially responsible and aware of the complexities that exist in today's global economy," said Catherine Decarie, SVP of Human Resources and Communications at EDC.

"A great way to understand those complexities and build cultural awareness is to experience those cultures first-hand, and operate within them," added Mrs. Decarie. "That is why international internships, like those offered by AIESEC, are invaluable in terms of shaping the next generation of responsible business leaders."

AIESEC's presence in 30 universities across Canada opens doors for over 2,200 student members to gain leadership experience and develop relevant career skills through internship opportunities abroad. Over the past 12 months AIESEC Canada has facilitated foreign internships for 462 Canadian students and recent graduates, 88% of which were in emerging markets. The number of AIESEC members going abroad in the last year increased by 30%, a trend that reflects the growing importance of global opportunities among Canadian youth.

"Pursuing an internship in an emerging market helped me acquire a new sense of global citizenship, as well as the skills and knowledge that differentiate me from my peers. I became highly adaptable and gained the "inside scoop" on the ASEAN market. Rising to this challenge is an opportunity that I recommend to all young people" said Iris Wong, a Canadian business finance intern in Malaysia.

Since 1958, AIESEC Canada has been facilitating a global internship program that connects Canadian companies with top youth talent from AIESEC's global network in 124 countries and territories. Through its leadership development and global internship program, AIESEC is developing the next generation of globally-minded and socially responsible leaders.
