YWCA of Calgary Announces Inaugural 'WHYWHISPER' Gala

Keynote speaker, the Rt. Hon. Michaëlle Jean, will encourage Calgarians to speak up and speak out

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 30, 2011) - The YWCA of Calgary is proud to announce the WHYWHISPER Gala, which will be held on November 17, 2011 at the TELUS Convention Centre.

The YWCA of Calgary has been speaking up and speaking out for the city's most vulnerable for the past 100 years. The gala will help draw attention to issues around domestic violence, homelessness and poverty. The event will also celebrate Calgarians who choose to stand up and speak out for those who have no voice.

Honorary Chairs for the inaugural event include Ann McCaig and W. Brett Wilson. Keynote speaker for the evening will be former Governor General, the Rt. Hon. Michaëlle Jean.

The Rt. Hon. Michaëlle Jean was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1968, fleeing the dictatorial regime of the time. During her studies, Ms. Jean worked for eight years with Quebec shelters for battered women, while actively contributing to the establishment of a network of emergency shelters throughout Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. She later ventured into journalism and became a highly regarded journalist and anchor of information programs at Radio-Canada television and CBC Newsworld. Throughout her career, she has captured the hearts and minds of Canadians and people around the world with her compassion, her grace, and her representation of our vast and diverse land.

"We are extremely fortunate to have such a distinguished keynote speaker and Honorary Chairs," said Sue Tomney, CEO of the YWCA of Calgary. "Their involvement highlights the importance of speaking up and speaking out on behalf of Calgary's most vulnerable women and children."

Sponsors for the evening include Vermilion Energy, Conroy Ross Partners and Enbridge. Additional sponsorship opportunities are still available.

Ticket prices are $250 per person and are now available at www.ywcaofcalgary.com, or by calling 403.262.0484.
