Zango Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Emoticon With New "EmotiContent"

Online Media Company Provides Signature Emoticons Compatible for Use With Windows Live Messenger®

BELLEVUE, WA--(Marketwire - September 20, 2007) - In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the emoticon, Zango is unveiling new emoticon packs for Windows Live Messenger®. Available on, consumers now have more and better ways to express themselves than ever. In a foul funk? Use the Rainy Mood face to convey that mood. Feeling a bit "hillbilly"? Try the Redneck Smile emoticon.

Twenty-five years ago this week, three keystrokes were combined to create a smiley face; unbeknownst to the creator, it would start a completely new way for users to express themselves. Continuing the emoticon phenomenon, Zango users can now download upgraded packs of 10, 15 and 20 different emoticons that automatically integrate directly into the user's Windows Live Messenger client, expanding the range of emoticons accessible through Windows Live Messenger. Microsoft's open application programming interface (API) for Windows Live Messenger enabled Zango to provide these signature emoticons for this popular instant-messaging medium.

Debunking stereotypical notions about the demographics of "average" consumers of free online applications like emoticons, a recent study by Zango indicated that adults ages 45 and older are the most prolific users of such entertainment-focused products. Zango provides all its users free, ad-supported access to a growing catalog of content now more than 100,000 pieces strong. This catalog includes online videos, games, music, tools and utilities like the emoticon packs.

"The integration of Zango's EmotiContent into Windows Live Messenger is already a popular addition to Zango's broad offering of free, premium content," noted Val Sanford, Zango's vice president of marketing and product management. "This is another clear example of the value that Zango's Content Economy provides discerning consumers."
