Zeidler is pleased to announce the recent opening of The Learning Exchange at Mohawk College—Fennell Campus in Hamilton. Designed to address the visibility of the college on Fennell Avenue, the Learning Exchange building creates a new front door and landmark entrance for the college. Now college and community events can be held on the new outdoor green space surrounding the building, integrating the campus with the surrounding community.

The three-level building houses the new Cummings Library, an applied research and innovation lab and 10 multi-purpose classrooms wired with the latest multimedia and internet technologies in approximately 43,000 sf designed to LEED ® Gold standard. Designed with flexible spaces that allow students to either study alone or to interact with others The Learning Exchange includes areas for book stacks, staff work areas and a variety of formal and informal group study areas.

"We were excited to take the idea of the traditional library and design a building that both incorporated those concepts while building an infrastructure to accommodate future learning which is more focused on collaborative interaction and access to information," said Vaidila Banelis, Senior Partner at Zeidler in charge of the project.

The building footprint and extensive windows allows light to flow into the building where the feature staircase edged with a living bio-wall provides the main circulation and orientation. Distinctive features include a stainless steel inverted frameless glass curtain wall system, polished concrete benches lining the 'collaboratory' for lounging, mushroom capped structural columns and exposed concrete floors with in-slab heating in the classrooms. The laminated coloured glass enclosure brings a fresh rainbow inspired overall hue on the upper level reflecting the inclusive and diverse student body of the college.

High-performance glazing, a storm water intercept cistern and a partial green roof are some of the sustainable features that help to ensure optimal occupant comfort while providing a healthy study, work and socializing space.
